Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Last week on Generation Gap we featured an Italian classic, the Alfa Romeo Spider. This week comes another storied Italian nameplate with a far more plebeian name in English and a controversial history. The Maserati “Four Doors” has gone from Frua to Bertone to Gandini to Pininfarina, evolving alongside the brand throughout its various stages and struggles over the past fifty years. Which was/is the best or at least your favorite?
The options:
First Generation [1963 - 1969] AM107

Second Generation [1974 - 1978] AM123

Third Generation [1979 - 1990] AM330

I dig the newest one, especially because of the warranty. The rest of them just don’t really do anything for me.

I like the first-gen for some reason.

The newest one seems pretty good although I fear it’s gone a bit mainstream, what with all the Chrysler parts sharing...

Me too. Even though it’s a Frua design, it almost looks Zagato from some angles.

I voted for the first for its relative simplicity and Frua style, but I'm torn between it and the Citroen-tastic 2nd gen. I've driven the 5th gen, and it's quite a nice car, but nothing from the bloated, heinous 3rd gen on does anything for me.

Agreed, the Citroen-esque II is just so awesome that I think I’d be my pick. I actually had never heard of the II prior to about a week ago so it’s news to me! I heard that it may have even had the hydropneumatics because of the Citroen funding? The 3rd generation is just a mess, from the era of the Kylami and Biturbo and the 4th is barely better. The 5th has been praised by many but the 6th seems too mainstream to be of any interest anymore.

Concur on all points. The 2nd gen had to have been equipped with the hydro-pneumatics, its stablemates the Bora and Khamsin had the brake “button.”
A slushbox can be fun, too!

The one with the most headlights wins. Always. AM123.

Right there with you. I took the fifth. Earlier models just did nothing to excite me. If I’m paying that $, I want excitement. They all dripped of competence as in how you evaluate cars at Consumer Reports.

The second generation looks like a Citroen SM sedan, so it wins. If only Citroen had badged that as a second generation Citroen DS . . .

Agreed. The DS is a brilliant idea!
